With Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes, the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia highlights different approaches contemporary artists use to represent the face and body in an exhibition designed for children.
The artists in this exhibition are either from and/or are currently living in the region. Using photography, painting and drawing, they all seem to intersect through one point: explorations of how these mortal bodies that we occupy represent unique individual and the stories. Our surfaces represent ourselves. Although the works will be hung at a lower height than normal to better engage children, we encourage art lovers of all ages to take the opportunity to view this exhibit.
The exhibition also explores issues of self-identity. All forms of media, whether it is in print, online, on television, or emblazoned across a t-shirt, convey messages about identity. Navigating competing ideas and complex concepts can be difficult, especially for children. Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes is a springboard for these discussions.
