Artist's Statement

My artistic process begins with the collection, arrangement and grouping of objects. I have been collecting ‘stuff’ all my life, often to the consternation to those that live with me. When I was a child, my family referred to the things that I collected as my ‘artifacts’, usually somewhat perplexed in the manner in which I organized and regrouped them. It seemed strange to me that the people around me did not see the beauty in things like the glitter of mica within granite, rusty metal, or torn lace.

As an adult, I continue to see beauty in these small, seemingly insignificant things, and find joy in arranging these artifacts to create a visual story, infusing them with new life. The iconography in my artwork reflects a unification of my experiences as an art therapist, art teacher, and student of symbolism and comparative religion. I seek to illustrate the threads of synchronicity existing throughout time and between different cultures with different spiritual belief systems. I juxtapose my personal artifacts with the borrowed symbols of other cultures to express our struggle to maintain uniqueness within a system and the difficulty maintaining harmony between the self and the group. Winged figures, prevalent in the myths of almost every human culture, are caught in flight and represent the spirit of the individual seeking to transcend the limitations of matter.
